The Flyboys at Mitzi’s Sister

Written by mikellis. Filed under Uncategorized. No comments.

Here’s a poster I just finished for my friend Mike’s band, The Flyboys, playing at Mitsi’s Sister on Saturday December 27th. It took me a while to get the birds to look alright… They started from a sketch I scanned into Photoshop. I then used the pen tool in Illustrator to create smoother outlines and fills. The background textures were done in Photoshop.

I would like to give credit for the bird missing a head to my friend Joren who originally came up with the idea in a sketch a few weeks ago. I re-appropriated it because it was such a cool image, thanks Joren!

Here is the original sketch I made, painted in photoshop. I’m pretty new to painting on the computer, so it’s a little sloppy. Now that I’m at home in Barrie for the holidays, I don’t have my large monitor and I forgot my tablet in Toronto. I’m back to working on my macbook’s tiny 13 inch screen… It’s hard to believe that I worked like this for years!

Chemical Sound’s Christmas Shindig

Another poster I did for my friend Kyle and his band INVASIONS. They will be playing at the Horseshoe on the 22nd, be sure to check them out!

So, I am done this semester of school!!! Now I can finally get to the things I’ve been wanting to do for so long… On my list:

- Revamp this crazy blog, maybe add a sketchbook area to the gallery, and set up a proper flash gallery…

- Revamp theglasskids.com, I will be changing Glass Kids into more of an art blog and we will expand our inventory to t-shirts, prints, posters, limited edition mini-books, skatedecks, a variety of buttons/pins, and original artwork all for sale online. My main goal by the summer is to have an entire glass kids “brand” of quirky art stuff created by Christopher Herrington and I.

- I also want to get around to finishing some artwork that I have laying around, get some shirts done, buttons, etc. Hopefully I will be able to photograph some of my artwork and upload it to the gallery at some point, it’s just really difficult the get the lighting right with my camera.

I am hoping that this break will be full of relaxation with a side of immense productivity. Here’s to the future and a new year!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Written by mikellis. Filed under Artwork, Illustration, Traditional Media. 2 Comments.

So the semester is nearly over and I just had my last Illustration class. My final assignment was to create a book cover for the novel, Perfume: the story of a murderer, by Patrick Süskind. Funny thing is that my instructor picked the book and it turned out to be one of my favourites. I’ve read it 3 times over the past few years, so I highly recommend it. I chose to take a very graphic approach at this illustration, using only 3 colours, black, white and red. The background is one of my favourite parts, I bought it from Kid Icarus on Nassau St. in Toronto. It’s a great little screen printing boutique just down the street from my house. It’s an old victorian styled wall paper pattern that was silk screened onto brown paper. It was intended to be wrapping paper, but at 2 bucks a sheet it make a great background for a painting. I am also going to be working on 2 new posters this weekend, so those should be up within the next couple of days.
