Borderline Artistic 1988
Mike Ellis was born on a sunny day in 1988 in Newmarket, Ontario. He enjoys a variety of mediums but leans towards the integration of analog and digital media. He is also a novice sculpture and installation artist. About to enter his thesis year at OCAD, he spends his time collecting things, especially comics, scraps of paper and bits of string. About
My name is Mike Ellis. I sometimes work under a similar name, mikellis. I am a thesis year Illustration student at OCAD University. I was born in Newmarket but raised in Barrie, Ontario and now live and work in Toronto, Ontario.
EXPERIENCE
I have worked as a freelance illustrator and designer since 2006. In the summer of 2008 I was awarded a business grant from the government of Ontario to develop the now defunct Glass Kids Skateboard Co. Since then I have worked on many important projects and have overseen the development and curation of creative events. Aside from commercial illustration, I have exhibited artwork at AWOL, Whippersnapper Gallery, Sleeping Giant, Canteen, Gallery 1313, and Function 13.
PRINT
My experience as an illustrator has carried into the realms of design. My work now features distinct design elements that incorporate inspiration from past eras. I have developed promotional materials, become an experienced printer, and overseen large areas of distribution. By incorporating printmaking techniques with a designer’s mentality I am able to produce high quality media with short turn-around times.
INSTALL
My work as an installation artist and sculpture artist began in late April 2010. As Co-curator of Today is Yesterday’s Tomorrow, a highly interactive and experiential exhibit, my recent work has taken on new meaning and greater conceptual principles.
