Michael Jackson is Dead

Michael Jackson

This is my Final copy of a NY-Times Op-Ed illustration completed for my Digital Media studio class. The illustration is supposed to touch on the fact that many people are distracted by celebrities’ lives which can divert themselves from the responsibilities of coping with harsh reality. Had to be Black&White, done in AI CS4. -Mikellis

Assignment Info:
The New York Times is internationally renowned for its journalistic integrity and in depth reporting style. The Opinions section or OP-ED page (as it is known) has showcased the talents of many conceptual illustrators interpreting a variety of current events editorials and letters to the editor in a succinct and graphically bold manner. Originally assigned one day before publication, the 4 to 5 hour deadline is considered one of the most challenging assignments an illustrator will face in their editorial career.

"The feeling of Floating"

A drawing I did over the weekend. I think it may make a cute T-shirt design.

I am pretty excited for this… My friend and colleague Finlay Paterson will be working on a series of 2d/3d animations this fall. Finlay is a very talented animator and I am excited to be working so closely with him.

So if he’s the animator, then what do I do? Well, to be specific, I do the concept art and character designs, we will be collaborating on the stories together. I will help with colouring and the design of digital sets.

At this moment I have the two main characters designed, Isaac (a shy and lovable boy) and his friend Nikolai (a cute barn owl who lives in a strawberry tree). Nikolai’s “bird house” is also a character who shows various emotions through the features of his facade. The title of Nik and Ike’s adventures is tentatively called “Aiming at Mountains, Shooting at Stars” which may or may not change. The first general storyline is still in development, however we still have a lot of work ahead of us as we develop our characters and sets with more detail.

Yeahhh… Kinda cartoony, but ohh well! Took a good half hour in illustrator to make. I’ve been doodling and playing around with Illustrator a lot the past few days. I’m warming myself up for my digital media classes this semester.

Hi Birdy!

This little guy was done at the same time as the Sweet Nothings characters, but I liked him so much I decided to put him in his own post! Enjoy!
